Qualifications

University of Plymouth, MSc Coastal Engineering
The MSc is recognized by the Institution of Civil Engineers as a Matching Section for Chartered Engineers.

Coastal Engineering
At Plymouth University I have covered a wide range of topics which include water waves, tidal theory plus the methods of laboratory testing, field data collection and analysis. The coastal engineering design module covered all main aspects of coastal engineering in the design and construction phases. This included offshore and inshore wave prediction (wave direction and frequency analysis), wave spectrums, extrapolation to extreme wave conditions, statistical life analysis etc. Design of breakwaters, revetments, groynes, jetties, marina channels\ship navigation, mooring\fenders etc was covered which included techniques and standards within BS 6349 (Parts 1 to 7), advanced series in ocean engineering and the shore protection manual. The knowledge gained from this was used to complete a detailed engineering feasibility study for a marina off Hannafore (outside Looe estuary in Cornwall). This included design of a main and inner breakwater designed for a 1:100 year extreme storm. Mike 21 was used to predict wave refraction, diffraction and shoaling of waves within the Looe bay plus used to simulate harbour tranquillity during a 1:50 year storm.

University of Exeter, CSM, Engineering Geology & Geotechnics BSc. Hons. ACSM.

Engineering Geology & Geotechnics
At CSM I gained skills in geotechnics, which include surface and excavation design, tunnelling and excavation design, hydrogeology etc. I did my Summer Vacation Project for my degree on coastal cliff stability of St Austell Bay. Stereographic representation & rock mass quality estimation (Q’, RMR & GSI) were completed for analysis of possibility of failure. It was found there are numerous landslides small and large being generally discontinuity dependent. A diverse range of large-scale failure types (up to 60 m in length) were identified, including discontinuity dominated failure (translational), multi discontinuity rotational failure, pseudo circular, wedge failure and planar failure. I did a slope design project on Du Porth Holiday Park Beach which includes the calculation of Factor of Safety, estimation of discontinuity shear strength using Barton equation, possible slope stabilization techniques e.g. hard engineering (armor stone, rock bolts) or soft engineering (beach re nourishment) for both failing and stable mudstone plus greenstone cliff faces.
